Protected animals including two saltwater crocodiles and a black-headed python have been allegedly discovered in the back of a speeding car stopped by police at Deception Bay, north of Brisbane.

The car was intercepted by two officers on the Deception Bay Road on-ramp to the Bruce Highway about 10:00pm on Monday.

A Queensland Police Service (QPS) media release said the officers then searched the vehicle where they discovered "four stowaways".

"Police will allege they located two active foot-and-a-half-long saltwater crocodiles in a bucket, and two snakes, a coastal python and a large black-headed python, in a bag," the release said.

Australia Zoo at Beerwah on the Sunshine Coast was able to assist with identification and temporary accommodation for the animals.

QPS said a 23-year-old New South Wales man was charged with two counts each of taking a protected animal and keeping a protected animal, and one count of stealing.

A 21-year-old NSW man was charged with two counts each of taking a protected animal and keeping a protected animal.

The pair was expected to appear in the Redcliffe Magistrates Court on March 23.

Makes you wonder how many are not caught? Seems like these people are only caught through either stupidity (moving parcels at the post office) or sheer luck like being pulled over and the cops looking through the vehicle....
