Rats 'n' Mice Buys
« on: October 01, 2013, 11:10:19 AM »
Hi guys,

This has probably been done before on here, but im curious as to where ppl buy there mice and rats from and what sort of price?
Where can you buy medium-large rats by the 10s or so?
Ive been told a place for chickens etc, so have taken advantage of that, but will only feed chicks sparingly, and im not keen on breeding my own rats.
I currently buy them singly and it adds a up a bit (average 3 rats a week at 10 bucks each)

I'm just around the corner from them so I get mine from ARC. I always love to visit too :). Have also bought smaller sizes in the past from ferret society members who breed their own for their animals.
Tip of the trade... make sure that your partner is just as addicted to reptiles as you are! Then the only argument you have is "OK, but where will we put them?"

Anyone have the Murdoch price list handy? Mice have been a bit slow so might have to pick up a few bags to get me through.

Cheers

From the last convo with Murdoch Uni, its nearly cheaper to buy rodents from a store, let alone the hassle of picking up during most working hours

Yes, that's why I don't support a group who's president cost every reptile keeper a shit load of money to feed their critters now! I used to be a member and donate stuff, but not any more.

More details? Did he really raise the prices? I thought they would be independent of anyone. Gets ridiculous paying $10 - $20 a rat at pet stores....

Mice smell more than Rats, I was told it is because they do not have a bladder.

hence my point weasleish, is there some one who locally breeds rats for pet supply, live rats are just as cheap as frozen ones, I just don't have the guts to euthanize the animal prior to feeding it to my pythons.
how about the supplier to the shops?
surely they'd wholesale out? what's the difference to them?

Most of it was covered in here.... http://www.pilbarapythons.com/trueblue/index.php?topic=2283.0

The story goes that a rodent company forced Murdoch to raise the prices as they couldn't compete with them. That is what the staff at Murdoch were saying... Whether it is true or not is for you to decide.
The President of WAHS owns Repeat Industries or at least is a part owner. Some people seem to think RI was involved in the price rise. The WAHS president reads the forum from time to time. So perhaps he can shed some light on the subject? Other wise ask him at the next meeting.... I've asked him about it before and all I got was his signature cackle.
